For anyone finding this in the future (not you cisco):

1. Download cml2_2.9.0-3_amd64-3.ova or latest cml2 version, open in VMWare Workstation Pro (CTRL+O).

2. Add refplat-20250616-fcs.iso under Edit > CD/DVD (IDE) > Use ISO Image File, boot up

3. Change the ssh port to 1122

4. restart ssh service

5. then upload the libsmartunified.so on tmp folder using WinSCP (or python http.server)

6.  copy or move libsmartunified.so file  to  /var/local/virl2/.local/lib/smart/   using console To get root access type 'sudo -E -s '

     sudo -E -s mv /tmp/libsmartunified.so /var/local/virl2/.local/lib/smart/

    Now Reboot the CML VM.

6. login with web ui go to tools, diagnostics, licensing, expand 'Smart Licensing Tech Support info', find UDI under 'Platform Provided Mapping Table'

SN: XXXXXXXXXXX and UUID: XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX

7. Now open license.txt file with notepad and search "udi" and paste the

SN: and UUID to under S: XXXXXXXXXXX,U:XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX and save the license.txt file.

8. go to tools> licensing Product Configuration and edit and select Enterprise License - CML-ENT-BASE

9. Now under tools>licensing click register and click here under If your Smart Account is authorized for License Reservations and you wish to reserve licenses

and click YES, MY SMART ACCOUNT IS LICENSE RESERVATION ENABLED

and click GENERATE RESERVATION REQUEST CODE

and Click to SAVE TO FILE and Cancel the window.

10. Now click the ENTER RESERVATION CODE and click the attach file icon and select the license.txt file

Now click INSTALL AUTHORIZATION CODE. That's it.

11. If you are denied with error "The license or authorization code was previously installed: Failed to complete reservation," change any digit under <signature>

Enjoy.

Anyone tried this for version 2.10 yet? Let us know if the license still works. PS. To answer my own question it works. You just have to replace the file again after upgrading to 10. sudo cp /home/sysadmin/libsmartunified.so /var/local/virl2/.local/lib/smart/libsmartunified.so

Upgraded with the "free version" upgrade package on top of a full version 2.9.1, copied libsmartunified.so and at first glance, everything appears to be fine.

Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) 2.9.1 Installation & Activation Guide
===============================================================

  Hide contents

This guide covers the deployment of CML 2.9.1 on VMware, including the configuration of the reference platforms and the application of custom licensing.

Prerequisites & Files
---------------------

Ensure you have the following files ready before starting:

CML OVA: cml2_f_2.9.1-7_amd64-7.ova (https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286193282/type/286326381/release/CML-Free) (account required)
   Refplat ISO:  refplat-20250616-fcs.iso (https://mega.nz/file/bcVl2RxQ#mBQIiK6Z-Qz988hYrN2Ej7hoTlxHSe8CiRiTA0wN3X0), or

   Patch File: libsmartunified.so (https://mega.nz/file/y9BknAqY#mT7KOHfSSa08Uyy2c7Op2CxryBNYUfbRju2N2JCBdxE)
   License Template: license.txt  (https://mega.nz/file/WlBBiBbb#wy5jmbtxLOmuDZC-yTlxTEI4mnUeajujpS6Ke1cNJKY)

Phase 1: Virtual Machine Setup
------------------------------

1.  Import OVA: Open VMware and select Open a Virtual Machine. Locate and select your .ova file.
2.  Naming: Choose a name and a storage path for the VM.
3.  Hardware Settings: Before powering on, click Edit virtual machine settings:
Processors: Enable Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI. This is mandatory for nested virtualization.
CD/DVD: Select Connect at power on, choose Use ISO image file, and browse to the refplat-xxxxx-fcs.iso.
Network Adapter: Set to Host-only. This prevents the VM from communicating with Cisco’s telemetry servers during the initial setup.

Phase 2: Initial System Configuration
-------------------------------------

1.  Power On: Start the VM and wait a few minutes for the CML setup splash screen.
2.  OS Setup: Follow the prompts (Continue/OK) until you reach the System User page.
System Credentials: Create a username and password for the underlying Ubuntu OS.
3.  Controller Setup: Create a separate username and password for the CML Web UI (the Controller).
4.  Networking: Select DHCP (or static if you have a specific Host-only range).
5.  Services: On the Optional Services screen, ensure OpenSSH is selected (press the Space bar to check the box).
6.  Finalize: Finish the wizard. The VM will eventually display the CML terminal console showing its assigned IP address.

Phase 3: Applying the Patch
---------------------------

1.  Transfer File: Use an SCP client (like WinSCP) to connect to the CML IP on Port 1122.
       Destination: Upload libsmartunified.so to /home/sysadmin/.
2.  Apply Patch: Use an SSH client (PuTTY/Terminal) or the VM console to move the file to the system directory:

        sudo cp /home/sysadmin/libsmartunified.so /var/local/virl2/.local/lib/smart/libsmartunified.so

3.  Verify: Confirm the file was overwritten correctly by checking the MD5 hash:

        md5sum /var/local/virl2/.local/lib/smart/libsmartunified.so

4.  Reboot: Apply changes by restarting the server:

        sudo reboot

Phase 4: Licensing & Final Activation
-------------------------------------

1.  Web Access: Navigate to https://<cml-server-ip> and log in using the Admin/Controller credentials you created in Phase 2.
2.  Gather UDI Data:
Go to Tools > Diagnostics > Licensing.
Expand Smart Licensing Tech Support info.
Under Platform Provided Mapping Table, copy the values for S:xxxxxxxxxxx,U:yyyyyyyy-yyyy-yyyy-yyyy-yyyyyyyyyyyy.
3.  Edit License File: Open your license.txt locally. Replace the placeholder values in the last line with the S: and U: strings you just copied. Save the file.
4.  Register License:
       Navigate to Tools > Licensing.
       Set Product Configuration to Enterprise.
Click Register > Start Here (next to the "License Reservations" prompt).
Select Yes, my smart account is license reservation enabled.
       Click Generate reservation request code.
Crucial: Ignore the generated code and click Cancel.
       Click Enter reservation authorization code.
Upload/paste the contents of your edited license.txt file.
5.  Disable Telemetry: To ensure long-term stability, go to Tools > System Administration > Telemetry, disable it, and click Save.

 Credits

TonyQ: For the original research and incredible patching effort.
netkillui: For providing the refplat ISO mirrors.
dovas57142: For the Mega mirror and community uploads.

Note: This guide is for educational and lab environments only. For production use, always purchase a legitimate license from Cisco.

Best procedure so far.

Thank you
