Cisco C800 series routers do not use a separate boot helper file (like xboot or rxboot images found on some legacy or high-end Cisco platforms. If the main system image gets deleted or corrupted, the router falls back to ROM Monitor (ROMmon) mode. From ROMmon, you can directly point the router to boot a fully functioning .bin file via a USB drive or TFTP server without needing an intermediate boot helper file. 1
